SHORTLY AFTER THE MOST mortifying thing I’d ever had happen to me in my entire existence, I was sitting in the back seat of Dani’s car as she drove Adam and I to the grocery store.

Adam had acted like nothing had happened, though an electricity in his eye made me suspect that he found the whole situation hilarious. He was wearing a dark red sweater that made his dark brown eyes and hair look even more vibrant. He looked gorgeous in the sweater, of course, and he’d paired it with black jeans that made his ass look amazing. Right now I was staring at Adam’s hand where it was resting on his knee. The same hand that I had just seen wrapped around a different member of his body.

“Eli, you look like you’ve seen a ghost,” Dani said, breaking into my internal dialogue.

“J-” I choked on nothing and had to clear my throat. “Just a lot on my mind.”

Dani squinted at me in the rearview mirror. “Right.”

“He saw me in the shower,” Adam said, flashing his dimple.

“Did he?” Dani said as she tried and failed to suppress a smile. “Bet you loved that, Eli.”

“I-it was an accident,” I stammered out in protest.

“Okay,” Dani left the if you say so part unsaid.

I crossed my arms over my chest and sank down into the seat. “I hate everything,” I groaned.

Adam met my eyes and grinned at me. The smile said a lot of things to me in that moment, but the loudest was; it’s okay, nothing’s changed. I returned the smile gratefully.

We arrived at the grocery store and spent the next hour and a half making our way through Mom’s enormous list of supplies. It turns out that Mom had been right and that going on a Monday morning was the best time to beat the crowds. They weren’t nearly as terrible as I remembered them being in years past.

Once we’d grabbed everything, we were standing in the checkout line. I’d tried to get us to go through the self checkout, but Dani refused. “There’s way too much shit here, we can let the professionals handle it.”

I was in line, staring blankly at the mountain of food in the cart, when I heard someone gasp in excitement. I didn’t pay it much attention until I heard my name.

“Eli!”

My head snapped in the voice's direction, and I quickly located the source.

“Kimberly?” I said. I’m not sure why I sounded so surprised, I knew that she had moved back into town after graduating college through her Instagram. I guess I hadn’t been prepared to see anyone I knew. I’d been too focused on my current problems.

Kimberly was a cute, thick girl, with curly brown hair and an infectious smile. Just the type to become a schoolteacher, which was good because if I remembered correctly, she’d gotten a teaching gig up at the school.

“I haven’t seen you in ages!” She squealed, rushing up to me and throwing her arms around me. “How are you? How’s life?”

“You know,” I said vaguely.
